I’m watching the psych lectures from Academic Earth, and as I’ve previously mentioned the lecturer is hilarious. He was just talking about ways theories can be wrong, and related it to an example about Astrology. He basically said it’s so broad it can’t be wrong, which negates it as a scientific theory. Science is distinguished from non-science by falsifiability. “I got my horoscope for today on the web: A couple of negative aspects could make you a bit finicky for the next few days. Ok, I’m gonna watch for that. The presence of both Mars and Venus suggest you want to box everything into a neat, ordered, structured way but keeping a piece of jade or carmillion close will help you keep in touch with your fun side. And starting this morning I got for my wife a little piece of jade and I have sort of been touched by my fun side. The problem is a few days aren’t gonna go by and I’d say ‘God that was wrong!’, it can’t be wrong, it’s just so vague. I got a better horoscope from The Onion, actually. Riding in a golf cart with snow cone in hand you’ll be tackled by 2 police officers this week after matching a composite caricature of suspected murderer. Now that’s a good prediction! Because, wow! If it turns out to be true I’m gonna say those guys really know something.”

So my next course of action was to check out The Onion horoscopes for this week.

Aries Mar 21 – Apr 19:

“Once the laughter dies down, the party favors are put away, and the monkeys led back inside their cages, you’ll finally be given a chance to explain your side of the story.”

Well, I know what needs to be done… Jill, I’m bringing monkeys to your BBQ.

Sheesh, I had a blogless phase of almost a week. And what a week! I should try and recall what I did. Probably not a whole lot.

I did manage to catch a few Goodnight Tiger gigs though.

They’ve scored some really ace gigs recently, and rightly so! It’s awesome. They gigged at the Loft last weekend with another friend’s band, The Preytells, who are amazing! The Preytells are easily one of my favourite live Perth acts, they’re really versitile and I’ve been following them for years. I never feel like myspace does them justice (or many small bands, really), but the singer’s passion simply radiates on stage. For some reason they were sans drummer at the Loft, but this was alright – they played a cosy little seated acoustic set with candles and a tambourine. I wish they’d gig more. At least their album launch will be in September.

Tonight I caught Goodnight Tiger again at the Indi Bar, which is conveniently close to where I live, and even had a dance with the Indi Bar’s infamous Sally and another groupie. Perrin had to retreat and face the back of the stage temporarily in order to contain herself. Sally is quite the lollarious dancer.

Continuing the great gig lineup trend, tonight they played with Ruby Boots, Felicity Groom and Jez Mead (solo, above) who topped the night off with some crazyfast breed of frenzied folk guitar playing. Greg informed me it wasn’t Jez’s ‘usual’ pace but it sure gathered a toe-tappingly wild crowd in the tiny dance area, including the Tiger groupies, and a Tiger herself.

I enjoy an occasional canned dance, and prompted by a Tigersprinkler, Sally cracked out the shopping trolley. This evolved into the conservative shopper comparing products, then an ingredient wary shopper, and finally the choosey fruit selector.

I quite enjoyed Jez’s music on turbocharge, he’s a very confident guitarist.

Thought I’d continue the trend of evening outings and head down to see the acoustic duo of Jill Chrisp and Perrin Date, Goodnight Tiger, play at the Indi Bar earlier tonight. I’m so glad I did. I think it was the highlight of my week’s evening adventures. These girls are so talented and beautiful, and always a pleasure to listen to.

*

Apart from being immersed in music I enjoy, which seems few and far between in Perth bars/clubs, the good company was partnered by free secondary entertainment in the form of a very drunk, blonde girl with distinctively bogan inflections. This woman was dancing up a storm, and occasionally shouting about how much she was loving the band. I feel bad for the girls having to compete with her noisemaking, but from the crowd’s perspective she was high-larious. I haven’t laughed as hard in quite awhile, especially when she gave her vodka mixer bottleneck a blowjob… For about 5 minutes.

It’s a small, well-lit venue and she was the sole dancer, in plain sight, standing in front of the stage showing this bottle a real good time. I’m not sure her table of friends approved… Assuming they are/were her friends.

I may have to source a photo my friend took.

A few songs later she’s dubbed my picture-taking friend “Sally” and called her up to dance. “Sally” was hesitant, but one of Jill’s best buddies, Richard, went up to dance with the drunkard and Sally followed. To our amusement Richard was virtually dance-shunned and this girl spent the whole time trying to gyrate with Sally. As Sally, aka Amalie, wrote on facebook; “She then proceeded to feel me up in not one, but THREE separate “Amalie/Significant other ONLY” locations and kept saying “OMG, SALLY YOU’RE SO AWESOME!”

I laughed. A lot. And next time I see Sally I will surely laugh some more.

After Goodnight Tiger’s set this girl was denied bar service and came over to invite Sally to continue the party at the Shammo. As appealing as it sounded we decided to stick around and watch a folk rock-y band called Arons Crusade, who also played a set I’d rate nothing less than wintimes bonanza. They had a lot of flair live and really got into playing the music. Hearts for passion. As in, I heart that they’re so passionate.

So, notes from this evening:

I’ve missed hanging out with the indie crew. They are lol and lighthearted. That is all.

*Photo by Adrian Broughton, leeched from facebook. This pic’s actually from Goodnight Tiger’s first ‘proper’ gig, at The Moon, but I regrettably didn’t take a camera this evening so couldn’t capture the bar setting, or any other shenanigans.
