Sci-fi clichés

Lots of em!

Was painting up this environment concept with the intention of making it folio-worthy, but no. I just couldn’t get past how cliché it is, so it shall remain as yet another speedpaint. I feel the composition, lighting and narrative is pretty good though. I wanted to indicate something had escaped, but not what.

Acid walker creature concept

Another creature concept for the folio.

Specimen

Another ‘creature’. I ripped it from an old Creature of the Week entry I made cos I thought the actual creature design was unique. I’ve repainted a few parts and put it in a test tube. I’ll probably repaint the body section, too, as I feel it’s the weakest part.

Specimen

Yep… Definitely need to repaint the body.

Creature concept

It’s been a few days since I’ve posted art and I’m here to remedy it.

I’ve been trying to sort all my old work and sketchbooks in order to compile a portfolio showcasing my ‘entertainment’ artstuffs. Basically a range of concept art related work – creatures, enviros, vehicles, characters.

I’ll be painting up a few sketches so stay tuned.

3D-appropriate proportions: concept art take 2

Took another stab at really exaggerating  proportions as described in my previous Torchlight post.

I think this monster would read well in 3D.

Night terror

Yeaaa, this probably isn’t appropriate for the laneway exhibition. I don’t really want to give any children walking through nightmares…

Or do I?…

No. No I don’t.

Although that could be a pretty brilliant marketing strategy! “My child has been afraid of going to bed ever since he/she saw Simon Boxer’s sketches at the Guerilla Laneway Exhibition.”
Then BAM! The right person hears about my nightmare-inducing art and I’m in the film industry designing long-limbed, lurking monsters with no eyes.

HMMMMMmmmm…

I like designing monsters.

PS. For the record, I don’t get night terrors. I have, however, (according to an ex) rode an invisible bicycle during my sleep. This may well be the reason I stay so slim.

What if…

…You were offered something you’d never have for something (at random) that you’ve always had?

20091104Offering

You’ve always had freckles. You don’t really need them, do you?… Or your birthmark?

Or maybe you’d lose the ability to speak without falling over. You’d be known as that guy that has to lay down to talk. Imagine how famous you’d become. You could also craft some pretty great pickup lines, which I imagine would need to be written on cards. Read the rest of this entry →

The divine Nibru

Chalk up another conceptart.org meme, and this one’s pretty epic. Artists from across the globe have reinvisioned Nibru for the hell of it and thrown their sketches into the mix.

Mine’s not nearly as awesome as some of the high end pros’ but I had to partake:

Concept art + graphic design portfolio

My portfolio is up and kicking… I’m still gradually adding bits and pieces of work but all the Snapshot exhibition art’s up there. If you didn’t make it along to the gallery go have a look-see.

Being based on a blog template you can also subscribe to my portfolio and track when I add new stuff! Which should be soon… Well, after Thailand.

A sign of things to come

For someone that “does art”, there sure hasn’t been much doing lately. At least not in the public eye, but secretly I’ve been busy busy. Now I’m in the process of redoing my portfolio website (which I’ll retrospectively link upon completion) so thought I’d post a newish concept that’ll be going up on it.

sboxer-dragondentistsmall

I did this piece a few months back for a Character of the Week topic at Conceptart.org. I <3 CA.org, it taught/teaches me a lot. The topic was Spike the Dragon Dentist, and I went for a kind of contemporary dragon mechanic character. Yep… Deep.
