Vue De Monde

While in Melbourne I was treated to a meal at Vue De Monde courtesy of a generous soul I did some design work for last year. It’s a very fancy French restaurant. So fancy that I needed to adapt my eating habits. Instead of mashing food into my face with a spade I had to use cutlery. Furthermore, I cut my food into little pieces. I did consider eating the smoked Kingfish fillet (my main) in one mouthful, then standing on the table and proclaiming myself “the winner”, but thought I’d save that initiative for when I remember to bring a megaphone.

Eating/rambling aside, this is a colour study referencing my Vue De Monde photos. I might actually refine it a little and get it printed… I like it. It’s efficient.

A little aside

Last Friday at the Beyond Motion office a bunch of ex-coworkers joined our prototyping crew of 4 for a festive beer o’clock. Read the rest of this entry →

Guerilla Laneway Exhibition timelapse

Who’s that sexy man in the preview frame? He appears to be holding one of my artworks.

Actually I feature pretty heavily in the start of this since I put my artworks up just above the crotch-level camera then loitered around chatting to various art-istes and designers.

Also note the subliminal Summer advertising around 0:19. ha

I don’t even remember who held the flyer. Probably Jeremy (the man behind this awesome video!)

I found it interesting to frantically pause-play this video and check it out frame by frame. It’s a great cross-section of the day, and there were a few things that stood out. Read the rest of this entry →

Guerilla Laneway exhibition

I’m just about to head to the Guerilla Laneway exhibition and put up my artworks.

If you’re reading this in the future, having seen my work and bludgeoned ‘facepocalypse.com’ into your keyboard, then welcome to my blog!

This is where I draw, paint, post about my upcoming exhibitions, show some freelance work and talk about various unrelated things like the angry bobtail in my backyard.  A link to my actual portfolio can be found in the sidebar. Or, you know, where I typed ‘actual portfolio’.

Plus if you feel so inclined you can show me love and +1 facebook fan that action.

Nick took the liberty of fixing the logo for me:

Thanks, Nick! *dusts hands* My work here is done.

To see more of his work come along to the Summer exhibition! Only 2 weeks away!

Also, there’s an eventface here.

Night terror

Yeaaa, this probably isn’t appropriate for the laneway exhibition. I don’t really want to give any children walking through nightmares…

Or do I?…

No. No I don’t.

Although that could be a pretty brilliant marketing strategy! “My child has been afraid of going to bed ever since he/she saw Simon Boxer’s sketches at the Guerilla Laneway Exhibition.”
Then BAM! The right person hears about my nightmare-inducing art and I’m in the film industry designing long-limbed, lurking monsters with no eyes.

HMMMMMmmmm…

I like designing monsters.

PS. For the record, I don’t get night terrors. I have, however, (according to an ex) rode an invisible bicycle during my sleep. This may well be the reason I stay so slim.

Emerge from Emergency (Room)

Last night whilst idly chit-chatting with a companion, and with little prior warning, my head exploded. I was rushed to Charles Gairdner hospital for reconstructive surgery. In the short space of time between this unfortunate event and being released this morning I learnt two things. Firstly; there is no chance of reconstructing a charred moustache (but complete substitution is an option), and secondly; Gairdner is spelt with an ‘i’.

I think they did a fairly good job. Although they did advise me it might take a few weeks before I acclimatise to looking in multiple directions at once.

Gobelins by Emmanuelle Walker

Caught this animated short on Drawn! and it’s pretty great so I thought I’d share.

Roberta?

The last time I saw Robert the bobtail was in May. The day I left for Thailand he was basking by the driveway as I departed for the airport.

A few weeks back I caught a new bobtail scuttling around the driveway before diving at some overgrown shrubbery. I retrieved food to ~summonz~ it but unlike Robert it was unresponsive.

In plot developing news, my cat is quite stubborn and doesn’t always use his cat door. I let him out the front this afternoon and we both lingered outside.  I sat down by the gardenbed and about 20 seconds later the shrub next to me starts rustling.

Ohai. You like strawberry mash?

I’m pretty certain this isn’t Robert. Judging by the tail, and the general pointiness of its features I think it’s female. Roberta maybe?

Elizabeth Gilbert talks about creativity

I found this talk very insightful. It goes for about 20 minutes so you’ll need some time, but she has a really forgiving perspective on being creative. Despite starting in somewhat dark territory she uses that to flesh out her point.

She talks about all these great expectations people have of creatives, that in turn can burden the artist/writer/musician/dancer/whatever. If you’re in the creative industry yourself, or are simply afraid of dabbling in some creative field for fear of failure then it’s quite a refreshing talk. Read the rest of this entry →
