Friday’s Letsmakegames.org event

This Friday is the next Letsmakegames.org event at eCentral Tafe.

There’s also a Facebook event for it.

There are a few programmers speaking (5:30-6:30pm) then general socialising (6:30-8pm). If you’re in Perth and interested in game development come down and meet some likeminded people. If you’re not interested in programming just come for the later portion.

Lego redesign

I just skimmed through this Lego redesign project and thought it was worth sharing. If you grew up with Lego, have an interest in design, or just like pretty pictures then you will certainly enjoy it. There are some great insights in there and a very functional (but aesthetically awesome) toy design process courtesy of a Swedish videogame artist named Niklas Jansson.

Global Game Jam – Bored Room

Global Game Jam is an annual event where game developers of all walks (hobbyists, professionals, students etc) meet and form teams to make a game over one weekend. There’s a theme which is revealed via the interwebs on Friday evening, this year it was ‘Deception’.

Last year I ground my hands to a pulp producing ~30hrs worth of art, which equated to not much sleep! This year I cut my participation back to about 16hrs (and went to the Big Day Out).

My main focus this year was a game we titled Bored Room. You can download the game install here and play it yourself! It has some very amusing dialogue.

I only had Saturday to make all the art, so kept it simple; but charming! Here are the characters:

And a room! Complete with a hulking security guy.

Team Fortress 2 propaganda poster

I designed this poster for the Team Fortress 2 demoman vs soldier propaganda contest. Just something pretty simple with limited colours.

I was gonna add text (taglines) but decided to keep it visual.

I also submitted a version with this logo at the top:

Rocket craftz

I made a few RocketFuse rockets yesterday, and decided to do an impromptu photoshoot this arvo after an epic-length lunch with Nick.

All in all a very refreshing day.

Bring on Semi-Permanent tomorrow!

Space Crash assets

Today was mostly consumed by making art assets for Space Crash over at Rockethands. This is Jack’s game-in-a-week baby and it’ll be a free iPhone game promoting Rocketfuse. Just a few tidbits for today’s art post.

The Space Crash banner:

And an explosion!

CardboardyDustAnimate2

It’s all cardboard themed, and that’s a meteor exploding, but the effect will be applied to all space debris when it gets destroyed.

I’ll point everyone in the right direction when the game’s released.

Kanye Kombat

I don’t know who to credit for this image, but I am amused.

Kanye’s sure opened himself up to a world of memes.

Skirmish

Here’s the last artwork for Operation: Star Hammer. An alien spacecraft with tendrils getting all “Take that! And one of these!” on a human ship.

Crashed armada

Here’s the painting with a crash. The alien armada crashes onto the planet surface and spews forth a purple liquid known as Space Ribena*.

*May or may not be Space Ribena.

Crashed probe

I got the last of the Apple Cider Tea Party paintings in today! Woot.

Time to squeeze in some work. I’m doing 3 sketches for Black Lab Games. Paul will be adding a bunch of Operation: Star Hammer content to the website including a back story about the game. These sketches will be used to illustrate the story.

This is a crashed Nautilid probe. It’s design was influenced by sea creatures. I think I prefer the image without the ~laser fencing~… especially since it’s not immediately obvious humans raised the fence.
