Arrived in Kansas City

My head is spinning, and I don’t mean metaphorically. I hope this is just the jetlag because I’m pretty phased at the moment, I certainly hit the ground running!

After arriving in LA on a delayed plane I was promptly whisked aside at customs due to my desire for a 6 month visa. I was shuffled into a waiting room and sat there for quite awhile as I waited for my more “in-depth” review on my visit to America. What ended up being a very brief discussion with the official there kind of made me think I was just palmed off by the guy at the first checkpoint. Anyway, in short I was granted my 6 month visa, but by the time I made it through the baggage check area (thankfully I wasn’t picked for further examination there) I’d just missed the check-in for my next flight (3hrs after my original scheduled arrival time).

Thankfully I wasn’t charged extra by American Airlines when they had to put me on another flight, although they did note the condition as being held up at customs so maybe there’s grace for that. Anyway, in short I arrived at the Rockhurst Uni campus at midnight, about 3 hours after I’d expected to be there to greet an instructor and be allocated a dorm. Needless to say it was pretty quiet around campus!

Good thing these guys run a hardcore art course as I could see there were some students from the Illustration Academy workshop (with some of the same instructors as TAD) sketching inside the building I needed to be in. An awesome student, Chris, let me in and happened to have a spare bed in his room so I stayed the night there. He ended up sketching quite late and fell asleep on a couch at ground floor. Unfortunately he doesn’t have a blog at the moment or I would’ve linked it, but he’s one to look out for. I’m sure I’ll post about fellow students later, but there are some really dedicated and awesome people in this workshop. I’ve just been hanging out in the Illustration Academy workshop studio since the TAD workshop doesn’t start til next week. So much of what I suspected has been reinforced by the people here and I’ve learnt a lot about illustrating as a process just in a few days.
