Zombieland – see it
I’m over in Melbourne at the moment, and I scored a new plane on the flight over (Qantas) with ample entertainment options! Despite having access to Inglorious Basterds and Where The Wild Things Are, both of which I’ve been meaning to see, I was strangely drawn to Zombieland.
Turns out I got more than I bargained for as I was struggling not to audibly laugh for most of the movie. The dialogue and situations were pretty hilarious at times, and I was consistently smiling throughout. Plus it has Bill Murray in an amusing role as himself. In summation; Zombieland has been smothered by the girlfriend-friendly showstopper, Avatar, but is worth seeing in my opinion. Unless you don’t like gore. Or zombies being killed in amusing ways.
The zombies themselves are similar to those in the Left 4 Dead series – they’re unhindered (ie. as fast as their regular human counterpart) and spit/dribble blood in sizeable quantities.
Also, I love what they did with typography throughout the movie, using text to unobtrusively compliment the main character’s ‘rules’ list as he narrates tips for surviving the zombie apocalypse. Plus there’s some pretty great cinematography and believable CG.
Maybe it was aided by my lack of expectations, but I rate it.
