Hottest 100 of 2009
I was deciding on my vote for the Triple J Hottest 100 of 2009, and after watching the clip for Drumming Song I thought a portrait sketch of Florence Welch would aptly tie in with a Hottest 100 blog post. After all, she is quite the hot sauce, with flame red locks to match.
So without further ado, here’s my pick from the list in alphabetical order:
Basement Jaxx – She’s No Good
^Great dancey number. I’m a sucker for the stompy beats and bulk bass. I went nuts to this at Future Music early last year.
Bertie Blackman – Byrds of Prey
^Loving Bertie’s new sound. Actually the songlist I’ve compiled generally has more of an electro influence this year.
Disco Nap – The Soft Sell
^Somewhat chilled track (compared to my other choices) from an unearthed winner. I don’t know what they’ve done with the vocals (they sound a bit enhanced/backed) but I like the sound. I couldn’t find a link as the TripleJ Unearthed site seems to be down, but when it’s up you can search it.
Florence & The Machine – Drumming Song
^Florence has such a powerful voice, and you’ll always find me drumming on the steering wheel when this is on the radio.
Florence & The Machine – Kiss With A Fist
^Rockin, aggressive with a hint of grunge, I’m pretty fond of the drums in this song, too. It’s an entertaining song, and struck me as pretty unique when I first heard it.
Metric – Help I’m Alive
^Another powerful female vocalist, with some kinda clever songwriting.
Mumford & Sons – Little Lion Man
^Heartfelt, and perfect for anyone that’s screwed up in love. It builds up really nicely, and gets me singing along emphatically. And by singing I mean shouting. Plus it has a banjo, and just plain rocks. I wouldn’t be surprised if it takes out number 1.
Muse – Unnatural Selection
^This song fires me up. If I still had a fro I’d be headbangin.
Passion Pit – Moth’s Wings
^Had to vote for something by Passion Pit, decided on this one. It feels very… nostalgic… Atmospheric, and summery. Like I’m lying in a dry, overgrown field. Passion Pit have a sort of childlike innocence that I like.
Whitley – Killer
^I assume this is a duet with Sarah Blasko, but don’t take my word for it. It feels more ‘real’ than his other songs, in that I think I can visualise the process and context behind this song having seen Whitley (with Blasko) on his latest tour. And it seems like another song I can relate to – Pursuing something supposedly unattainable.
As you can see I was pretty single-crazed with my voting this year. Except for Muse. I really didn’t care for the tracks hammered on Triple J. But I did like Knights of Cydonia before it got airplay, so maybe the same will happen with Unnatural Selection and it’ll be rediscovered this year after they play the Big Day Out and become the most requested song for several weeks straight. ha
Anyway, as previously mentioned I’m heading to Melbourne tomorrow morning so it may be quiet here til I get back on the 18th.
