Where The Wild Things Are

I’ve mentioned before that I love Terrible Yellow Eyes. It’s inspired me to do my own, just for fun. Here’s a quick block-in, which I’ll render up nice over the next few days. At least that’s the plan :)

Also, a big thanks to those who’ve emailed or otherwise told me how much they’re enjoying my new sketchblog initiative. Much appreciated, and thanks for stopping by! <3

Just saw District 9

Aside from the ultra-shaky camerawork I quite enjoyed it, and am totally envious of those who got to design all the sweet guns and vehicles! It would’ve been really fun to concept. I thought their mech was pretty sweet and couldn’t wait to get home and sketch a mech of my own, loosely inspired by the one in the movie.

Although the arms are barely detailed, and by the time I got near the feet I completely copped out and covered them in dust. lawl

And a little work-in-progress image. People generally draw with a lean in one direction, which is why I had to straighten it up near the end. If you’re working digitally and want to check your perspective etc just flip the canvas horizontally and you’ll notice things like that.

WAMbot

I’ve been working on a flyer for a crew over at iVEC, just thought I’d share my little robot makeover matte-painting which will be the background image. I went and took a pic of this basic robot @ UWA. Unfortunately it was too awkward to take adventuring, as I’d hoped to photograph it in a desert/gravelly setting. I also sourced a low res image for the camera (which I had to clean up) courtesy of the University of Oulu.

Because it’s for a job I thought I’d better watermark it… Here’s the before and after:

Learning!

Academic Earth is awesome! It’s an online learning resource with lecture series’ covering a wide range of topics. I’ve always been interested in psychology, so that’s where I’ve started. The lecturer’s quite entertaining, too. Added bonus!

“Unlike a lot of other courses, some people come to Intro Psychology with some unusual motivations. Maybe you’re crazy, and hope to become less crazy.”

lol

Thankyou, Yale.

Dr Sketchy’s August

Today’s sketches come straight from this evening’s burlesque life drawing session.

I think this was one of the 5 or 10 minute poses… Can’t recall. Most of the poses she did were similar except for the arms.

They also have little ~games~, one of which is to best encorporate a theme into a 2 minute pose. Today’s theme was ‘hooping cough’, since the model had hula hoops. The best drawing gets a small prize.

I did a contour drawing for the hell of it, then participated in the competition with the justification that I drew the pose as if I were an infant.

I got a delicious candy for my effort :>

Visual development – Ogre

I went to a Dot Dot Dash workshop last night, at which artists were paired with writers and will be working on a short story stemming from the theme “Ugly”. I believe the basic premise of Dot Dot Dash’s conception was a student-run publication for aspiring writers and artists to get published. As such, most of the people participating are either recent graduates, current students or hobbyists. The first issue is of a high standard though, I was impressed. Looks very swish. There are some very passionate people behind this magazine.

Anyway, for issue 2 some of these short stories will be published. I’m working with a girl named Vanessa on a story about an ogre who has little creatures building a city in his mouth. That’s all I’ll say for now, but here’s a little visual development for the ogre character:

Treescape Learnings

What’s wrong with this?

Simon Boxer 20090824-farm-treescapesmall

Maybe other artists can learn from my mistake with this sketch. It’s hard to focus because there’s too much noise in the trees, whereas the focal point should be the deer.

I added an outer glow because I thought about making it all ~ethereal~ and whatnot, but gave up on that idea. Alas, it was too late, since I’d already rasterized the layer. heh

Redemption

Because yesterday’s sketch was so generic I thought I’d better spend a little more time on today’s, and do something completely different.

Condor Towers carpark

Some weeks back on July 25th the Condor Towers carpark was opened for one evening to showcase the result of 100+ artists (mostly street artists) painting its walls and pillars.

It was really refreshing to see the mass turnout for its public viewing night, with a lot of trendy people weaving through the carpark’s interior. It’s nice to see projects like that are becoming a within the Perth art scene.

If you missed it on the evening, Jerrem’s posted some footage here. As well as linked to some pics on flickr. Also, I make a brief appearance in the video @ 2:20, so keep an eye out!
