The great doorstep obstacle
I just picked up a wheelchair. Damn, these things are fun! I’m inspired to take up extreme wheelchairing so started honing my skills around the house. It’s like an obstacle course with all these little steps that you just don’t notice on foot, but there was one place I actually got stuck. The front door, while trying to get out.
It’s hard to see exactly what’s going on in the pic but the chair kind of wedged itself over the step. The big wheels were behind a small step at the doorframe and the footrests were too low to move any further without grinding into the mat/concrete. So there I was, beaming with persistence, trying to launch the back wheels over the little step only to keep spinning them on the spot, each time getting enough forward push to clang into the flyscreen door and knock it open a bit more. It was making a lot of noise and next time I looked up there was a girl riding past staring at me with a massive grin.
Dear grinning girl, if you read my blog: It was as fun as it looked. In exchange for pancakes I will let you try it yourself. I have maple syrup, so maybe we can create some sort of resource sharing pool involving pancakes, maple syrup and wheelchairs… Delicious Communism. You’ll need to make a lot of pancakes to equate to the use of my wheelchair and maple syrup, though.
Anyway, I look forward to engorging myself on pancakes. You know where I live.
Cheers,
S
