Hottest 100… evar.

Jack recently posted his top 10 and I thought I’d do the same. Let the judgement commence.

After much deliberation I said screw it, and just chose ‘Welcome Home’ as my last song even though it’s a bit obscure. In no particular order (followed by ‘why’s):

Nine Inch Nails – The Great Below
Johnny Cash – Hurt
Coldplay – Fix You
Daft Punk – Harder Better Faster Stronger
Death Cab for Cutie – We Looked Like Giants
Queens of the Stone Age – First It Giveth
Tool – Forty Six & 2
Jose Gonzalez – Teardrop
Muse – Knights Of Cydonia
Radical Face – Welcome Home

Now for some reasoning.

I put The Great Below as my favourite. I just love the way it builds up, and its ambience. Plus I have a deep-seated love for Nine Inch Nails. I don’t listen to them as much nowadays, but they’re still an old favourite. I’d love to see them live but they’re allergic to Perth.

Hurt is another NIN song, but I voted for the Johnny Cash cover. He plays it really well, and it suits him. Also, it’s good for beginners to play on guitar :>

Deciding which Coldplay song to vote for was really tough since I wanted to share the votes around between bands. I chose Fix You because it’s so heartfelt and emotionally moving. The most moving song I know, for me at least. Plus it’s totally epic, especially live with everyone singing. I discovered it quite late, but when I first heard this song it really hit home.

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger is my hottest electronica song fo’sho. I have been known to indulge in a bit of half-arsed roboting to this tune. Had to mix up the genres a bit and get in this standout song.

My specific Death Cab song choice was a bit obscure, but there’s something about We Looked Like Giants that I really like. I admire Gibbard’s songwriting, he’s got a great sense of narrative. This song is nostalgic, I like the tune, and I like singing* along as if I mean it. As if I shared a similar special experience. I could do the horoscope thing and interpret it like I did, but in the end it just comes down to being an immersive song.

First it Giveth has been my ringtone since I got a phone capable of making noises more interesting than a beep. This song moves like a cheetah on crack. It’s got energy, and like the rest of Songs for the Deaf, it gets me headbangin.

Forty Six & 2 grew on me something chronic. When I first bought the album I was confused that my art class buddy liked Forty Six & 2 best. All the non-science oriented kids did art and funnily enough I was a science oriented kid. Consequently, my only real friend in art class was a rebellious dark horse, who was also my main competition for top of the yeargroup. He was one of those funny, backchatting guys that people want to be friends with, but was too apathetic for this to happen. We used to talk about Tool amongst other things and Forty Six & 2 was always his favourite song. At the time I didn’t give it much attention over the rest of the album but obviously my opinion’s changed since highschool. This song rocks.

It seems a bit underhanded putting covers on the list but Teardrop’s awesome, and the way Jose Gonzalez plays it is incredible. He’s a very talented musician. Him and his guitar work wonders. Listen to it.

Well… I had to put it on. I wish it wasn’t on Guitar Hero, and I wish it wasn’t the most requested song on super request for about 3 weeks straight over a year after it was released, but hey… Before it was completely overplayed I really liked this song. It’s so damn epic!! I was surprised it was last on the album when I first bought it, as it was my immediate favourite. To me it also embodies part of my love for Queen in its wanky epicness.

At this point I’d decided what my favourite 9 were and needed a last song of many I had left in the shortlist. I chose Welcome Home mainly so I could get my fricken vote it and stop staring at the pitch black void that is the voting website background. This represents my like of indie, electronica-ish music like Postal Service, Elbow, Electric President (Radical Face’s other project) etc. The song itself was the only Radical Face tune listed, but it has a great buildup and soothing tune. As far as I know they only released one album under the guise of Radical Face, but it’s a goodun.

*I use the term loosely
