Doing it the right way
With our upcoming exhibition, Nick and I have been perusing Perth printing services.
I had my heart set on stretched+framed canvas printing and chased quotes accordingly. We were advised by fine arts printing services that the quality difference between your generic Big Ws and Officeworks canvas printing and that of a dedicated specialty printer is huge. Ofcourse, that’s part of their sales pitch, but having dealt with a range of printers for graphic design work I can believe it. You get what you pay for.
I figure I’ve spent all this time creating artwork for the exhibition and it could easily sabotaged by the choice of printer.
I think I’ve made a good choice, and ended up going with Fitzgerald Photo Imaging in North Perth. The sample print they did up for me looked hot and they were generous enough to work with my budget (which I felt was very reasonable for my bulk order) despite being a complete stranger. A lot of the time I feel like business is about who you know, so it’s nice to be reminded some people are helpful regardless of preconceptions. My request was given to the manager by counter staff, and I was told they’d get back to me. To the manager I’m any old faceless customer, and it’s much easier to say ‘no’ when you’re not the one delivering the message. I think the fact that he’s agreed to help me says a lot about his management style. What goes around comes around, and here I am praising his business. Having said that, this is a two way relationship and they need to make the monets, but being a bit flexible and impressing clients is a great way to build a solid customer base.
If you’re trying to run a business or sell a service it’s foolish to go stonestyles and walletplunder anyone that walks your way. Keep the long term goals in mind. Reputation is important.
